This is a link to a very interesting article by Eric Swain about a book that scrutinizes today’s methods of review, arguing that they are obsolete and cannot be trusted. He applies the theory to the common review style of video-game journalism, and concludes that they must evolve to meet higher standards – and the needs of their target audience. Watch out for my in-depth feature on the do’s and don’ts of a REAL game review next week, and not just some hyped-up, spoon-fed Metacritic scorefest.

The graph below shows how scores of a high level will be given out to games that do not deserve them and are therefore average or even bad in nature and mechanics. Read the full article linked above and be sure to come back to read my aforementioned in-depth feature to understand why this is such a common trend today.
